What to Think AboutThese are things that the different members of an Event Staff should think about when beginning to set up and when looking for a site for an Event. Autocrats Try to choose a site as accessible as possible (questions concerning the accessibility of your site can be answered by your local Porter). The Following areas should be clearly identified: +Accessible bathrooms, classrooms, elevators, and other important event areas. +All paths, hallways, and emergency doors must be free of obstructions. Those that aren't should be posted for everyone's safety. +If a Sign language interpreter is requested for court and/or class. (2-3 week notice to Porters there are no guarantees of a ingerpreter being available) +Challenged SCAdians should have access to court when summoned. +Service dogs must be allowed at all events (It's mundane law). +Some activities should be planned for challenged SCAdians. +If your site has some restrictions try to find a creative way to make it accessible. +Regardless of how it may take away from the site's "period-style" it is better to stay on the side of mundane law - remember Corpora does state that mundane laws are ALWAYS supreme! The SCA and its local groups are NOT immune from prosecution under the Disabilities Act. Head Cook / Feastocrats Add to your announcement your contact information to obtain ingredient lists or to accommodate special needs. Troll Provide information on closest phone as well as telephone numbers and addresses for non-911 services, ie. Hospitals, pharmacy, Dentists, etc..: + We have found that a local phone book meets this need quite well. Provide information regarding any second story activities and how to get there: + A sign regarding the elevator’s whereabouts & how it works if it is a freight elevator/ or person to help work it if necessary. + If a keyed elevator keep that key at troll Feast information: + Put a copy of the ingredient list at Troll for those who come unprepared at the last minute. + If the feast is buffet, find out if any of your group would volunteer as tray carriers. + If so, provide Tray Carrier Volunteer and Tray Carrier Request sheets at the troll booth. MOL & MOAS Accessibility issues for those participating in the arts and sciences activities can be discussed by contacting the Regional Porter for more information. Any further questions or to obtain pamphlets, sheets, or for a site
evaluation contact the Regional Porter. Please don’t hesitate to
contact me with any thoughts or issues you may have concerning the
Porter’s Position or to volunteer to help.
