What is the Accessibility Porter?

The Accessibility Porter office was founded by the East Kingdom to give aide to those SCAdians who need it. We are here to help the members understand the needs of persons with disAbilities and to be sure that all in our society have access to activities.

Our quest is to help all members find accessibility within the society. As such we try to help persons with disAbilities to participate in SCA activities as much as humanly possible.

We work with disAbled members of the society to help facilitate their participation. To this end we work closely with autocrats and seneschals to make Events, practices, classes, etc. accessible to those who wish to participate.

We have informational pamphlets and, hopefully in the future will have equipment available upon request. We are available to help autocrats by doing “walk-thrus” of event sites and giving feed-back and ideas on how this event is or can become more accessible. We also help, by doing write-ups on the accessibility of the site for use in the Pikestaff.

We are here to be a go-between for the disAbled SCAdians and the Autocrats and Seneschals to facilitate participation for all.

Autocrats are not expected to know or understand all the facets of accessibility to SCA events, that is the Porters office’s responsibility. But unless the Autocrat contacts the Porters office we are unable to help.

Therefore, it is the Autocrat’s responsibility to contact their local Porter during the planning stages of their event for ideas and information regarding their accessibility. The Porter can do a walk-thru of the intended site and evaluate its accessibility.

If a site is not accessible, we try to help the autocrat to find ways to make their site accessible. If a site is unable to be worked around and it is the only available site we make sure that the autocrat’s event announcement reflects this, as we would if the site was accessible.

In contrast, it is the responsibility of those participants who are disAbled to contact the autocrat and their local Porter for information regarding the accessibility of a site if it is unclear or not rated in the Pikestaff. As well as make arrangements with the Porters and autocrat for help with accessibility to this event (if possible). ie. Court interpretation (if available), food allergies within reason, handicapped bathrooms, etc…

We appreciate any insights, questions or comments concerning the Porter’s Position, and of course Volunteers are always appreciated.
